Drones

Drones can capture truly spectacular unique aerial wedding photographs of your wedding. However, there is a lot to consider and measures to put in place to ensure you meet the requirements for a drone to be used.

Legal Requirements

You must make sure that your drone operator is a safe and legal operator. By law, any drone operator who is flying for commercial gain or in a public area must have permission from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and have a valid insurance. There are many illegal drone operators who use them without CAA permission or insurance, which is a criminal offence.

Drone Safe Register (DSR), is a searchable drone hire directory which only lists professional drone operators with CAA permission - so please check if the drone supplier you are interested in, is on the register.

What will the drone operator need to supply/do?
  • We will need a copy of their public liability insurance (which needs to be a minimum of £5 million)
  • A copy of their CAA permission to fly
  • Book an appointment with our General Manager to conduct an onsite survey and produce a written risk assessment of which they will provide The Ferry House Inn a copy
Drones are not toys and are not simple to use with many safety aspects to consider which a professional will be aware of from gaining their permissions from the CAA.

When can they be used?
Drones are noisy because they are controlled by motors so we do not recommend to use them during outdoor ceremonies. They can be used as your guests are arriving or to follow the bride and/or groom arriving. They can also be used after the ceremony when you are greeting your guests and having group photos outside. You should fully discuss where and when you would like your pilot to film or take pictures prior to your wedding day so this can form part of their risk assessment, changes can not be made on the day.

What if it rains or is windy?
Drones can not be used in rain or high winds so be prepared that weather conditions can cancel any photo or video plans.

For more information please use CAA website
